Praiano Italy

The name of the town originates from the word praia, or beach, which is derived from the Latin term pelagium, signifying "open sea." In the 10th-11th centuries, Praiano served as the summer home for the doges of the Duchy of Amalfi. During the Angevin era, a fortified tower known as the Assiola was built to protect the town. Praiano once had a significant local silk industry, but it vanished in the 19th century. The economy of Praiano was rejuvenated with the discovery of corals in the nearby areas around the 1800s, and since then, it has primarily concentrated on the fishing and tourism sectors.
