Riviera Maya México

The Riviera Maya is a tourist and resort area in Mexico. It spans the coastal Highway along the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo, situated on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. Historically, this district began at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum. Areas targeted for urban development include the towns and villages of: Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Chemuyil, and Tulum. A key attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef water activities that rely on the coastal waters and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which starts near Cancun and extends along the entire length of the Riviera Maya, continuing south to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world. Activities at the most frequented locations include jet-skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip-lining, horseback riding, sailing, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology is also a major tourist attraction in the area, including the popular archaeological sites managed by the National Institute of Archaeology such as Tulum on the coast, and Chichen Itza and Coba located some distance inland.
