Torre del Greco Italy

The city of Torre del Greco is located in the southern Italian region of Campania, in the province of Naples. Torre del Greco lies at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano, which in the past often caused the town to be destroyed. In 1631 and 1794 Torre del Greco was buried under a thick layer of lava. The place was probably created as a rich suburb of Herculaneum. Until the year 1000 the city was called Turris Octava. The current name is derived from a grape variety that thrives here: the Greco. During the Middle Ages it was very prosperous due to the rich fish catches and large yields from the coral processing.
